Mobile network operators ordered to halt free SIM delivery, or face legal punishment

There are many problem has been happening in Cambodia regarding to the Sim Cards free distribution to users. Therefore, authority has asked all mobile network operators in Cambodia to stop delivering free Sim Cards without getting a copy of identification card from their clients, warning that they would face legal action if they disobey the order.

The warning was made during a meeting on Thursday between authority and representatives of mobile network operators. The telephone operating companies have to respect the law, or it could lead to the closure of their business, said General Chhai Sinarith, deputy commissioner general of National Police.

According to the law, citizens who received Sim Cards have to provide a copy of their valid ID cards to the companies, but usually some people used this chance to get Sim Cards without using their ID cards, he said. Sinarith said because of violation of procedure advised by authorities, criminals and other people had used mobile network to commit robbery, to kidnap and be involved in drug trafficking, which caused difficulties for authorities to capture them.

The number of mobile subscribers in Cambodia reached 20 millions last year, while the country's population is only about 15 million, according to a report released on March this year by the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications.

As of June 2013, there are seven telephone operating companies in Cambodia. They are Metfone, Smart, Cellcard, Beeline, qb, Excell and Cootel. According to: The Cambodia Herald
