Cambodian rice exporters fret as India offloads stocks

Cambodian rice exporters fear that India's decision to release five million tons of rice in the open market may adversely affect global rice exports, an industry source says.

In a posting on its website late Wednesday, Oryza noted that India competes with Cambodia in the international market for long-grain rice.

The Cambodian rice exporters are "concerned whether India would offload more stock into global markets at cheaper prices thereby impacting global rice prices," it said.

Oryza said that long-grain rice accounted for about 44 percent of the 148,262 tons of rice exported by Cambodia in the first five months of this year, up about one percent from the same period last year.

Cambodia exported 378,856 tons of rice in 2013, up about 84 percent from a year earlier, it added.
