PHNOM PENH: Thai and Cambodian companies invested 50 million US
dollars to build rice mills in Kampong Speu province. the agreement of
joint venture was inked by Thai and Cambodian representatives in Phnom
Penh on June 19.
“This joint venture represents as significant milestone for the Cambodian rice industry as CPI will bring its state of the art expertise in rice milling and refining as well as ready market access to more than 100 countries in the world, said Mr Prasit Damrongchietanon, vice chairman of CP Trading Group Co. LTd from Thailand.
Cambodia’s Soma Group CEO Mr. Sok Puthyvuth, oldest son of Dr. Sok An, deputy prime minister and minister of council of ministers said: “this new joint venture represents a win-win proposition for the whole rice value chain as we will work closely with the rice farmers through contract farming to help improve the yield, quality and predictability of the off -take as well as buy milled rice from various Cambodian rice mills to refine in our factory.” the name of the joint venture is yet to be disclosed.
according to a single window secretariat, Cambodia exported 27,971 tons of milled rice product in May is lower than in previous month while in April the kingdom exported about 35, 961 tons. For first five months of 2014, Cambodia exported about 148, 262 tons of milled rice product while France alone bought over 28,000 tons, according to secretariat of single window. Cambodia planned to export one million tons by 2015. in 2013, Cambodia produced over 9 million tons of milled rice product with a surplus of 5 million tons for exports.
